_________
Fractured States is a story about the cost of change and how a group of families overcome a lifetime prison sentence by fighting for an equitable future in the same marijuana/cannabis industry that led to their imprisonment.
Filmed over 5 years throughout South Central, Los Angeles, this documentary chronicles the creation of a multi-billion dollar industry on the backs of those most affected by decades of failed drug policy. Fractured States intimately portrays the total cost of incarceration and shows the larger ripple effect imprisonment can have on individuals, families and whole communities during a period where legal marijuana/cannabis has become an “essential service” in many cities and states following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite these harsh realities, Fractured States shines above as a hopeful tale of resilience in the face of insurmountable odds. It is a story that proves many of the people serving time for non-violent drug crimes are not always the hardened criminals people on the outside might imagine. They are sons and fathers, business and family men working to find peace and justice within an unjust system.
